Major Potato Chip Brands Issue Recall Over Fears of Salmonella Contamination

A major U.S. potato chip brand has issued a recall of certain potato chips amid fears of Salmonella contamination. One seasoning ingredient is reportedly the culprit. A popular snack brand is now pulling several products from shelves over concerns about potentially dangerous contamination. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Utz Quality Foods has issued a recall of certain potato chips sold under the Zapp’s and Dirty brands. The concern involves a seasoning ingredient used in the chips. The chips contain dry milk powder that may be contaminated with Salmonella, a bacterium that can cause serious illness. Although the affected seasoning batches were tested and found to be free of contamination before being used, the company says it is recalling the products “out of an abundance of caution.” “This voluntary recall follows notification to Utz that a seasoning containing dry milk powder, sourced from California Dairies, Inc. and supplied by a third-party supplier, may contain the presence of Salmonella. The affected seasoning batches tested negative for Salmonella prior to use; however, out of an abundance of caution, Utz is recalling the limited varieties of Zapp’s and Dirty brand potato chips identified below,” the FDA writes. Anyone who has purchased the affected chips should not eat them. Instead, they should throw them away or return them for a refund. Salmonella infections can cause symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, nausea, and stomach cramps. Symptoms can appear anywhere from a few hours to several days after exposure. In vulnerable groups—including young children, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems—the infection can become severe. The recalled chips were distributed across the United States and include several flavors and sizes from both brands.
